Chapter 1. The Word

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

The same was in the beginning with God.

All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.

In him was life; and the life was the light of men.

And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.

There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe.

He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.

He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.

Where we are

Reading first — because it's the key to everything.

Reading is the key to everything else — every subject, and a lifetime of learning, is built on it. So we built it first, and it works beautifully right now: both learning to read and reading real literature, free to start today. Verafy Academy grows from there, one subject at a time. Every other subject is in active development, and getting each one right may take us months or years. We won't fake it: a subject earns its place only when we've found a real way to teach it and prove the learning happened. So start reading now — and help us build the rest. Tell us how you'd teach everything else.

For you and yours

Proof of learning,
for you.

Verafy is introducing something new, with patents pending: Learning you can verify is real, done by a real person. The verification is analog and runs on your device.

In the reading context, the listen-watch-scroll actions assure full attention from the learner when reading. Similarly, in other contexts, our patent pending methods put the learner at the center, requiring near continuous feedback to make sure the learning is happening. And in many modes, a short comprehension quiz further assures that learning happened.

Who we are

Built by educators to give you and yours a great free education.

Verafy Learning is built by Trey and Ellice Tomeny — lifelong educators — as a gift to families everywhere. The belief behind it is simple: now that knowledge is becoming abundant and nearly free to deliver, no child and no curious adult should be priced out of a great education.

Learning you can trust

Plenty of tools can teach. Verafy proves the learning was real — that a present, engaged human actually did the work.

A record that's yours

Every verified session builds your Verafied Record — portable, lifelong proof of what you've learned that you own, not us.

For everyone, always

Open to every family and every learner, with no in-group and no gatekeeping. Universal by design, and free for good.

How it works

You see the proof.

First,

They really learn

Each method requires near continuous interaction, so progress is earned by truly learning — not skipping to the end.

Earned by interacting
Then,

They show they understood

Quick questions check real comprehension, so "done" means learned, not just finished.

Comprehension, checked
Finally,

You get the proof

A parent dashboard and weekly report card shows what was learned, what was understood, and that it was really them.

Proof you can see

And it adds up. Every proven session is real, verified progress — earned by genuine learning, never faked.

Your guide

Meet Vera Fy.

Vera Fy is the friendly host of Verafy Learning — a warm, patient guide who welcomes you in and walks you through the eyes-ears-hands method, whether you're six or sixty. She cheers the first sounded-out word and the first university-level idea alike. Vera is openly an AI and never pretends otherwise; she helps you learn, but she never does the verifying, and she never sees who you are. The proof of your learning is yours, and it stays on your device.

The library

Books that have earned their place.

No licensed cartoon tie-ins, no leveled-reader filler. Two shelves — simple texts for brand-new readers, and full classics for reading to learn — drawn from the books families have trusted for a century, and always growing.

A sampling of the opening shelves. Full texts, beautifully set, read aloud by the voices on your device, or by more natural voices as we grow and improve them.

For parents

A weekly report card that proves it.

Every week you get a private report card of what your learners have learned, what they understood, and proof they did the work themselves — built from their stats. It's the easiest way to know the learning is real. And soon, it's where your family's free local offers — through Veramony and the Verafy Store — arrive, too.

What you can learn

A full education — one method at a time.

Each subject needs its own way to prove real learning. Reading is live now. The rest are in development, and your feedback shapes how we teach them.

Live

Learn to Read

Phonics, letter sounds, and sight words. The listen-watch-scroll method gets a brand-new reader decoding real words, one at a time.

Live

Literature

Full classic books, beautifully set and read aloud, with comprehension checks — reading to learn, not just learning to read. Reading is the foundation everything else is built on.

Building

Writing

Handwriting and spelling to grammar, storytelling, and the polished essay.

Building

Mathematics

Taught Socratically from counting all the way up through calculus — question by question, so the reasoning itself is the proof. We're writing this one by hand, from real classroom experience. In active development.

Building

Science

Life, earth, and physical science with suggested hands-on experiments — and on to biology, chemistry, and physics.

Building

Social Studies

History, geography, civics, and economics — from community helpers to world events and government.

Building

Art

History and concepts, and suggested hands-on works — leading to a high-school portfolio.

Building

Music

Notation, concepts, theory, and suggested hands-on training — from first songs to performance and composition.

Building

Technology

Typing and internet safety to coding and digital tools — onward to programming, AI, and career skills.

On any device you have

Any device is now a place to learn.

No special hardware needed. For young children, we suggest a dedicated tablet — an inexpensive one works great — pin Verafy Academy as the only app your learner opens: no feeds, no store, no way out. Just learning.

We also suggest inexpensive headphones for younger children.

Veramony & the Verafy Store

Earn as you learn, buy real things.

Every minute of verified learning earns Veramony ($VM) — reward value your learner can spend in the Verafy Store on products and services from local merchants — and on classes from local hands-on teachers that require showing up in person, like athletics, arts, drama, and music. Finish and master a whole book or unit, and that learning's Veramony doubles.

Earn by learning

Verified learning earns about $1 in Veramony an hour — and double that, about $2 an hour, when you finish a whole book or unit and pass its final quiz.

Spend it in the Store

Some items are 100% Veramony; others are discounts you split between Veramony and cash. Sections run from 100% $VM all the way down to 10% $VM.

Local to you

The Store is curated by zip code, so you only ever see products and services available in your own area.

How it works, in real life

A nearby restaurant offers a free kids' meal for $6 VM (kids under 12). A child reads a three-hour book and earns $3 VM — then $3 VM more for finishing it and passing the final quiz. In the Store they pick the kids' meal, we deduct $6 VM from that child's balance, and email a voucher to redeem in person.

The Store isn't open yet — we're lining up merchant partners. This is a preview of how Veramony rewards will work.

Help us build it

You know how you'd teach it. Tell us.

We're building every subject in the open. If you're a parent, a teacher, or just someone with a strong opinion about how a subject should be taught and proven — we want to hear it. This is how Verafy gets better.

We read every message. We never sell or share what you send.

Common questions

Is Verafy Learning really free?
Yes — completely, for every family, always. No ads, no tracking, no paid tier, and we never sell or share your information. Trey and Ellice developed it, and the Verafy Store's merchant partners help sustain it over time. Families who want to give back can choose to, but that is not required for full access.
How do you know my child actually learned?
That's the whole point of Verafy. Our patent-pending methods keep the learner at the center of every session — when reading, following the words as they're read aloud, with the kind of near-continuous interaction a bot can't fake — and short comprehension checks confirm it sank in. The proof is real, not just a checkmark.
What does "verified" mean, and who owns the proof?
Verification is analog and runs on your own device. Every verified session adds to your Verafied Record — portable, lifelong proof of what you've learned that belongs to you, not us. You can keep it, carry it, export it, or delete it anytime.
What ages is it for?
Everyone, from about four to a hundred and four. Reading starts with first sounds and sight words and grows all the way to real literature; other subjects run from the basics to university-level work. We aim to meet each learner right where they are.
What can we learn right now?
Reading is fully live today, in two tracks: Learn to Read (phonics and sight words) and Literature (real classic books with comprehension checks). Reading is the foundation of every other subject and of lifelong learning, which is why we built it first. Every other subject — Writing, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Art, Music, and Technology — is in active development. You can watch them arrive over the coming months, and your feedback helps shape how each one is taught.
Why is only reading finished?
Because each subject needs its own way to prove real learning — reading uses listen-watch-scroll; math will be Socratic; others we're still designing. We build them one at a time and only ship a subject when the teaching and the proof are genuinely good. That's slower, and it's the point: no fake subjects, no filler.
What's the difference between Learn to Read and Literature?
Learn to Read is for a new reader — phonics, letter sounds, and sight words, with a shelf of simple early texts. Literature is reading to learn — full classic books, read aloud and beautifully set, with comprehension checks. Each has its own library, and a learner can grow from one into the other.
How can I help build Verafy?
Start reading, and tell us what's working and what isn't — especially how you'd teach the subjects we haven't finished. There's a feedback form right on this page. Early families and teachers are shaping every subject we build.
Can Verafy be our whole school yet?
Not yet — and we'd rather be honest than oversell. Today Verafy is an excellent, free reading program, plus a front-row seat as we build the rest of a full education in the open. Use it now for reading, and grow into the other subjects with us as they become real. Our long-term aim is a great, free education for everyone, everywhere.
Who is Vera Fy — a real person?
Vera Fy is your friendly guide, and she's openly an AI — she never pretends otherwise. She helps you learn and find your next great read, but she never does the verifying and never sees who you are. Your proof stays on your device.
Do you use AI, and is my family's data safe?
We use AI to help teach — never to decide whether the learning was real. That's the analog verification, and it runs on your device. We never sell or share your information, Verafy is built to meet children's-privacy law from the ground up, and you own your Verafied Record.
What is Veramony?
Veramony ($VM) is reward value your learner earns by learning — about $1 in Veramony an hour of verified learning, and double that when they finish a whole book or unit and pass its final quiz. It's spent in the Verafy Store.
What is the Verafy Store, and is it open yet?
The Store is where earned Veramony is spent — on products and services from local merchants, and on in-person classes like athletics, art, drama, and music. It's curated by zip code, so you only ever see offers near you. It isn't open yet; we're lining up merchant partners and local educators now.
Does my child's information go to your partners?
No. When you redeem, we deduct the Veramony and email a voucher you bring in person. The merchant or educator gets the voucher, never your child's information. That's by design.
What device do we need?
Just about any device works — an inexpensive one is great, and there's no special hardware. We suggest pinning Verafy as the only app your learner opens, so they stay off the wild west web — just learning. We don't currently sell a device but may offer a few in the store soon. We do suggest headphones for more focused learning. Verafy Academy also runs well on desktops and laptops.
How do I see how my child is doing?
Each week you get a private report card showing what was learned, what was understood, and proof your learner did the work themselves. You also get a parent dashboard that you can access at any time to see your family's learning. It's the easiest way to know the learning is real — and soon, your family's local Veramony offers will arrive there too.
Who built this

Created by teacher grandparents.

Trey and Ellice Tomeny are professional educators who live in Orem, Utah, with a combined nine children and seven grandchildren between them.

Trey was a founder of Legacy Christian Academy in Frisco, Texas, and of Coram Deo Academy in Flower Mound, Texas. He and his first wife homeschooled their two young boys until the day they started going to school with them — every day.

Ellice has been a public school art teacher since 2015, after her first husband passed.

Trey and Ellice share one of life’s heaviest burdens: each has buried a child. TJ, Trey’s oldest son, went to be with Jesus in 2005 at the age of 14. Joshua, Ellice’s middle son, entered eternity in 2016 at the age of 25, after a lifetime with spina bifida. Verafy Learning is built in their memory — for every hour a parent gets to spend reading with a child.

Trey and Ellice were married in 2021, and Verafy Learning is their joint creation. They are excited to share it with the world and to continue to work on it until every person in the world can get a great and free education.
